Biomedical Microdevices and Nanomaterials

  • The Hisey Lab explores biomedical micro- and nanotechnology as it intersects with AI, with a strong focus on extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are micro- and nanoscale lipid-enclosed particles that contain diverse molecular cargo and circulate in all bodily fluids as a form of intercellular communication. However, despite their potential in applications ranging from diagnostics to therapeutics, their clinical translation is limited by several unique technical challenges. By combining engineering principles and a strong foundation in micro-nanofabrication with expertise in EV production, isolation, and characterization, our multi-disciplinary team aims to develop novel platform technologies that accelerate EV applications ranging from cancer and infectious diseases to reproductive health.

Vision Statement:

The Hisey Lab designs and develops biomedical microdevices and nanomaterials to improve human health. With a current focus on solving critical challenges in extracellular vesicle (EV) research, ranging from scalable production to functional biomimicry, we aim to accelerate the development of transformative diagnostics and therapeutic EV technologies.

Values Statement:

We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are essential to scientific innovation and progress. By fostering a supportive, safe, and collaborative environment, where every voice is valued, we aim to empower individuals to reach their full creative and scientific potential.
